Racist beating on Baseline Road & 46th Street in Phoenix, Arizona

3 Phoenix Police Officers beat up man in Tempe

It could have been worse! I could have been beaten up by the cops like this guy was. He was beaten up much more badly by these Phoenix Police Officers then I was by the racist Black guy(s).

And if they ever catch the racist Black guy(s) at least they will be charged with a crime. These criminal cops will probably never be charged with a crime or even be punished. And in the even they are actually punished it will probably be a slap on the wrist!

Three Phoenix police officers have been removed from patrol in connection with an off-duty brawl outside a Tempe nightspot that left one man seriously injured early Friday.

Officer Benjamin Scarborough, 26, was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault and was later released. Scarborough has been a Phoenix police officer for 18 months and works out of the Central City precinct.

Tempe police said bike officers were called at 2:11 a.m. to an area near Fifth Street and Ash Avenue, where they found a badly injured Ryan Lake, 28. Lake was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn with injuries to his head and face.

In the course of the investigation, Tempe police said they learned that Scarborough several times punched and kicked Lake, who at one point lost consciousness. It was not clear what role the other officers may have played or if Scarborough was arrested at the scene.

Sgt. Joel Tranter, a Phoenix police spokesman, said the attack was an "unfortunate incident" and that the officers involved face an internal investigation.

Family members say Lake had finished celebrating his birthday at nearby Margarita Rocks when he came across a group of men hassling a friend and tried to intervene.

Lake told his father, Ron Lake Sr., that the men identified themselves as Phoenix police officers and one used a police badge to strike Lake, cutting him above the eye. Investigators did not release details, but the elder Lake said his son last remembers being placed in a chokehold before waking up in the hospital.

The extent of Lake's injuries was not available Friday, but his father said he had loose teeth, a swollen face, a possibly broken jaw and major bruising on his limbs.

"It looks like he got hit by a car," the elder Lake said.

The family wonders if the assault was connected to a lawsuit against the city brought by longtime Phoenix police Detective David Lake, the victim's brother.

The detective filed suit against the city in 2006 for failure to respond to public-information requests. A Maricopa County Superior Court judge denied jurisdiction and tossed the case in 2007. That decision is being appealed.

"We're thinking this might be retaliatory," Ron Lake said. "Aren't you sworn to protect and serve the public? They're the ones that are supposed to stop these things from happening."

Tranter said the officers have been given non-enforcement administrative assignments, such as working a desk or being assigned to stay home, while Phoenix police conduct an internal investigation.

But staying home isn't the same as being on leave; the officer must be available to the department at any time, Tranter said.
