'Free' site charges for credit report by Dave Cherry - Aug. 1, 2011 12:00 AM Ask Dave Question: I tried to get my free credit report from freecreditreport.com. They charged me for it and signed me up for a monitoring service. What's up? - Brian Berg, ScottsdaleAnswer: You made a classic mistake many consumers make. You went to the wrong website. The website freecreditreport.com is not the place you go to get your free credit reports entitled under federal law. The only website that provides you a totally free credit report is annualcreditreport.com. If you visit any other site, you can bet that you will have to provide a credit card and sign up for a monthly service in order to get your "free" report. At annualcreditreport.com, you can get all three of your yearly free reports at once (from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) or get one at a time over the year.
