TUCSON - The former mayor of Nogales in southeastern Arizona has been sentenced to 3 1/2years in prison.

Octavio Garcia-Von Borstel was sentenced in Pima County Superior Court on Monday in Tucson. He was convicted of fraud and illegally conducting an enterprise.

Garcia-Von Borstel and his father had pleaded no contest in June to counts that stemmed from an investigation into money laundering.

The Arizona Attorney General's Office sought indictments for the men last fall after Western Union won a civil lawsuit against them and investigators uncovered independent evidence that they were involved in money laundering.

Garcia-Von Borstel set up a company to cash checks and obtain money orders through his father's check-cashing company without actually paying for them, defrauding Western Union of nearly $618,000.

In exchange for the pleas, the Attorney General's Office dismissed bribery, conflict-of-interest and money-laundering charges.
