Bureaucracy won't improve safety

Think of it as a jobs program for government nannies

Don't think of it as a program to improve safety, think of it as a jobs program for overpaid, under worked government bureaucrats.

Bureaucracy won't improve safety

Unfortunately, Kathleen Ingley - and most other "more government" proponents - just don't understand reality if they think that the deaths linked to tainted cantaloupes make the case for government regulation (Quick Hit, Monday).

Anyone who thinks that a slow-moving government bureaucracy can effectively manage a food-borne illness (particularly with a perishable product) is going to be sadly disappointed.

Having been the quality-control manager for several food-processing plants (under fulltime USDA inspection), I can assure you that such inspection did virtually nothing to maintain food safety.

Similarly, regulation without swift and vigilant enforcement is worse than worthless. Just ask the victims of Bernie Madoff when the Securities and Exchange Commission was warned for years that he was running a scam. Yet they failed to act.

Increased regulation isn't the answer.

The regulations in place now aren't enforced. What good are more going to do other than make a few "big government" types feel good that "something" is being done?
