Anne LeRoi and Hedvig Samuelson were killed here.
According to Winnie Ruth Judd she killed them
in self defense.
2929 N Second StreetI suspect to keep people who want to visit the house the address has been change to: 2947 N Second StreetThe book said that Winnie Ruth Judd used to live on Brill Street, but it didn't give an address. Jury pay $4.50 a dayBack in 1931 when they put her on trial jurors were paid $4.50 a day for their services. Right now that sounds like a lot of money, in those days compared to the peanuts they pay jurors now days.No discovery in those daysNow days when ever you have a criminal trial they have a concept called "discovery", which means the cops and prosecutors are required by law to give all of the information they have about the case to the defendants lawyers.Of course that is in theory, because many times the cops and the prosecutors break the law and don't hand over all the information they have because they would rather have the defendant be railroaded and be convicted then get a fair trial. But back in those days there was no "discovery" requirement. I did a google on that and at the Federal level it seems that "discovery" came about around 1934. KTAR - The Arizona RepublicThe book said that in those days the radio station KTAR, which was owned by the Arizona Republic stood for the worlds "The Arizona Republic".Mesa Mayor Dan KlienmanA former Mesa Mayor Dan Klienman was a member of the jury the convicted Winnie Ruth Judd. It said that Dan Klienman was the reason the jury decided to give her the death penalty.Mesa Mayor Dan Klienman was a mormon nut job who loved the police state. According to the book the jury didn't like the fact the Winnie Ruth Judd didn't say anything in her defense or even tell them what happened. Mesa Mayor Dan Klienman told the jury that they should give her the death penalty to make her talk. He said that after Winnie Ruth Judd talked that he had connections which would allow her to get the death penalty dropped. Marian LaneOn her final escape from the nut house on 24th and Van Buren Winnie Ruth Judd moved to the San Francisco Bay area where she got a job using the name "Marian Lane".The book said she still uses that name today. It said she got a job as a maid working for some very wealthy folks and lived a very nice life. Winnie Ruth Judd was railroadedFrom the book it sure sounds like Winnie Ruth Judd was railroaded by the criminal justice system back in 1931.I guess not much has changed because people still get screwed by the criminal justice system.
