I think some Arizona cities have passed laws making it illegal to talk on a cell phone or send text messages while driving. Of course the laws make an exception for cops.
Personally I think these laws are silly "feel good" laws that should be repealed. But if they exist the should apply to everybody and NOT exclude cops. Woman Says She Was Hit By Cop Talking on Cell Phone KTLA News 11:42 a.m. PDT, September 23, 2011 HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- A 47-year old woman is suing the city of Huntington Beach claiming she was hit by a speeding police officer who was talking on his cellphone. In the claim, filed Monday, Catherine Sanchez said she was struck by an officer who was speeding and wasn't paying attention while crossing Main Street on a green light on May 30. Sanchez's attorney, Dyke Huish, says Sanchez's son managed to pull her out of the way before a full impact, but she was hit on the left side of her body, causing bruising and pain to her back. Adding insult to injury, Huish claims the officer stopped long enough to yelled at them to get out of the way, then drove away. "I don't think that police officers should be on their cellphones," Huish said. "I don't think that when they hit people, they should be allowed to drive away." The Huntington Beach Police Department is denying the allegations. Police Chief Ken Small said a police report was not taken because the woman was not hit and the officer did not leave the scene. "She didn't say that she was hit by the police car, and there were other witnesses who also said she was not hit by the police car, so we did not take a traffic accident report," Small said. In addition to her injuries, the claim states Sanchez suffered from emotional distress from the incident. |
