Woman Fatally Crushed in Midtown Elevator Accident By ANDY NEWMAN and AL BAKER Updated 12:43 p.m. A 41-year-old woman was crushed to death when she entered an elevator at the Madison Avenue headquarters of the advertising giant Y&R and it suddenly rose before the doors had closed, pinning her between the floor of the elevator and ceiling of the elevator entrance, the authorities said. “She was stepping in and the elevator shot up,” a law enforcement official said. The accident happened around 10 a.m. at 285 Madison Avenue, a 28-story building at the corner of 40th Street. No other information about the woman who died was immediately released. The woman, Suzanne Hart, was pronounced dead at the scene. The networking site Linkedin lists a Suzanne Hart as director of new business content and experience at Y&R. Two other passengers on the elevator were slightly injured and taken to New York University Langone Medical Center, the authorities said. As firefighters and emergency medical technicians swarmed the mosaic-tiled lobby of the 85-year-old building, a stream of employees emerged into the street, many visibly upset. A woman who said she had worked in the building for 15 years said she had never heard of any serious problems with the elevator that fell, which serves the second through 12th floors. Elevator inspection records online show that violation citations have been issued for the building’s 13 elevators over the years, but there was no immediate word on whether the elevator that fell has had problems. The building is also home to several other agencies, including Kang & Lee, Blast Radius, BrandBuzz and Bravo. All of them, including Y&R, formerly known as Young & Rubicam, announced this month that they were moving out of the building. Meredith Hoffman contributed reporting. |
